CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) – Colleagues and relatives of a Fort Campbell medic who died last week in Afghanistan said he was dedicated to helping others on the battlefield.
Pfc. Jonathan David Hall, 23, died April 8 from wounds suffered a day earlier when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan. Hall was a combat medic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division.
He joined the Army in October 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in August 2009.
Tennessee Army National Guard Capt. Jim Ridings told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that Hall was accepted into a special enlistment program that allows people without prior military service to join the Guard, then do a stint in the active duty Army.
“Very few qualify for the ‘active first’ program because it has a higher standard,” Ridings said. “He was dedicated to becoming the bes t he could be … and his focus was to help other people, whether that meant treating blisters on their feet or patching up open wounds.”
His grandfather, Don Priddy, said Hall grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, but lived with his grandparents in Chattanooga for about seven months while he went through his enlistment process.
“He loved Chattanooga,” said his grandmother, Jan Priddy.
Don Priddy, who is also a veteran, said his grandson loved the service and talked about making the military a career.
“Even on this patrol, he volunteered to go because he wanted to be with his men. As it turned out, he was the one who did not survive the attack,” Priddy said.
The family has his burial planned for Monday in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
