The U.S. Department of Defense identified a North Miami Beach sailor Sunday as a casualty in the war in Afghanistan.
Hospital Corpsman Edwin Gonzalez, 22, died Friday in a roadside blast in the Helmand province.
Gonzalez had been assigned to the 2nd Marine Division, Fleet Marine Forces, Atlantic, Camp LeJeune, N.C.
The blast in the Helmand province killed three NATO service members, including a Briton.
The Helmand province is in the south of Afghanistan, where fighting has surged since NATO and Afghan forces launched operation Dragon Strike last month in areas around Kandahar city – 260 miles (420 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Kabul – to flush out militants and destroy their strongholds. Southern Afghanistan is the birthplace of the Taliban, and the hard-line militia’s presence is strong there.
At least 2,014 NATO service members have died since the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

we love you edwin. superman lives in our hearts and minds. we miss you greatly. <3
my heart goes out to the family and friends of this young corpsman.
Edwin was a great shipmate, and a outstanding Corpsman. The goofy smile or smirk he always had on his face even when thinks weren't going his way, always could make you think it was going to be better. Gonzo was always there to take care of his Marines and will be missed by all.
Rest in Peace Gonzo. Rest Easy Brother.

I'm going to miss him so much, even though I lost contacts with him after I was stationed in Japan. He will always be my shipmate and my superman. I only have great memories of him in our school years. May he rest in peace.

May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted knowing that he was a hero who died for his country.
Me and “Gonzo” went to Corps School together and would always call each other “puertorican brothers from different mothers”. He would always tell me how motivated he was to be out there with the Marines in the frontlines and his reason for it because when he was little he almost drowned on a pool and a Marine saved him. Lost contact with him after we both graduated. I still can't believe this happened (having shivers right now) and I can only give my sincerest condolences to the family of this great hero. Rest in Peace bro.

It was nice talking to him the last time he visited us at St.Stephens in Miramar. I remember how excited he was to be a newlywed and loved to show off his ring. We grew up together going to Sunday school and I will always remember that smirk he always had in class. He was such a sweet person and proud of who he was, You will be missed buddy.
Edwin was a great young man and a great Corpsman. He loved his job and it showed every day. I never had to worry about anything when it came to his Marines. Rocco said it best because he did always have a smile on his face and that made everyone around him smile. I will never forget you Gonzo. You will forever be an inspiration to us all. Rest in Peace brother.
